Live or Not

Live status, scheduled streams, and premieres are different kinds of reminders

Understand the difference between detecting a live broadcast and reminding you about a scheduled show, premiere, or release.

Live or Not guide: Live means happening now

A schedule tells you what is planned

A scheduled show is a useful planning signal: a creator intends to broadcast at a particular time. It does not establish that the broadcast has started. Shows can begin late, move, or be canceled, and some creators go live without a schedule that you have seen.

A calendar reminder answers “When did I plan to check?” A live-status alert answers “Has a live broadcast been detected?” Those are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. Keeping them separate makes your expectations of any notification tool much clearer.

Live detection checks the current state

Live or Not checks the Whatnot creators you follow and notifies you when it finds a live show. Keep your Mac awake and online. Checks repeat regularly, so an alert may arrive after the broadcast begins.

That means the app is useful for unscheduled broadcasts as well as shows whose start time you forgot. It also means a notification is not guaranteed to arrive at the precise beginning of a show. A desktop app cannot observe new activity while its computer is asleep or disconnected.

A premiere is its own product feature

A premiere has a planned start time, while a live stream may begin without notice. Use a calendar or the platform’s reminder feature for scheduled events.

The customer release of Live or Not does not include YouTube alerts, premiere reminders, or scheduled-release reminders. Do not buy it for those features today. The current offering is Whatnot creator tracking and live alerts on Mac.

Combine the right tools for the event

For an announced event that matters to you, keep a calendar reminder or the platform’s own event reminder. For the Whatnot creators you follow during your workday, a small desktop watchlist can provide an additional signal when a show is detected.

When evaluating another platform or a future version, ask three specific questions: Does it track this type of event? How frequently does it check? What happens when the computer is asleep? Those answers are more useful than a broad promise to keep you updated about everything.
