Clip Relay

Camera originals vs. webcam recording: what are you actually saving?

Understand camera-original files, webcam capture, and monitoring previews before choosing a Mac video-recording workflow.

Clip Relay guide: Choose the right recording path

The file’s origin matters

A camera can participate in several computer workflows, and they do not all produce the same kind of file. One path records inside the camera and then copies that recording. Another sends a video feed to computer software, which creates its own recording. A live preview may simply help you frame the shot without being the file you intend to edit.

Before changing your setup, decide which result you need: the camera’s original recording, a recording created by your streaming software, or both. That decision helps you choose the connection method and avoid discovering after a session that you saved the wrong source.

What an original-clip transfer does

Clip Relay lets you control recording from your Mac and copies the camera’s original clip after you stop. Use the live preview to frame your shot, then open the transferred file to review the recording.

Choose your recording quality and audio settings on the camera before filming. Make a short test recording, transfer it, and open the saved Mac file to check the result.

When a webcam path makes sense

For a video call or live broadcast, the computer needs an active video source. Sony offers Imaging Edge Webcam for compatible models and operating systems, and its documentation distinguishes that use from other camera connection methods. Consult the current supported-model list rather than assuming that remote recording support also means webcam support.

If you record a stream or meeting on the computer, examine the output created by that application. Do not infer its format or quality from what the camera could record internally. The feed, capture application, and selected settings together determine that file.

Verify the result, not just the preview

Create a thirty-second sample, speak a few words, move through the frame, and stop recording. Locate the actual saved file, open it, and check its duration and audio. If your project uses an editor, import the sample there too.

For Clip Relay, confirm your Mac and camera combination on the product page: Apple silicon and macOS 14.1 or later are required; A7R V is tested, and the additional listed Sony models remain experimental. Choose the workflow around the file you need, then use the test to confirm it reaches your editing environment intact.
