Clip Relay
How to organize video takes on your Mac before editing
Use a simple project folder structure, preserve camera originals, and track good takes without renaming files during transfer.

Give each session a clear destination
A folder full of camera filenames becomes easier to use when the surrounding structure explains the project. Before recording, create one project folder and separate the camera originals, working project, exports, and reference material. Add a recording-date folder when a project spans multiple sessions.
For example, a project could contain Camera Originals/2026-10-10, Edit Project, Exports, and Notes. The exact names are less important than choosing a structure you can repeat. Avoid introducing a different system for every session just because the current project feels small.
Let the transfer finish before organizing files
Choose your destination folder in Clip Relay before recording. After each take, wait for the transfer to finish before moving or renaming the file.
Open the saved clips and check that every take is there before you start organizing them.
Keep a lightweight take log
A plain note can save more editing time than an elaborate naming scheme. Record the take number or camera filename alongside a short comment: strong opening, microphone rub, alternate ending, or best delivery. Keep those notes with the project.
This is particularly helpful when several takes have similar thumbnails. The log preserves the reason you liked one version while the decision is fresh. You can retain the original camera filename and still have a readable index of the session.
Build the handoff to editing and backup
Import the verified originals into your editor and save the editing project in its own folder. If you create proxies or optimized media, keep their role clear so they do not become confused with the original recording. When collaborating, share the folder structure and take notes as part of the handoff.
A transfer into a working folder is not automatically an independent backup. Maintain another verified copy appropriate to your project before clearing the camera’s source media. The point of a tidy folder system is to make the next action obvious: review, edit, export, or recover.
Clip Relay can automate getting the original clip onto the Mac after recording. The organization around that transfer is what turns a convenient app action into a repeatable production workflow.
