Clip Relay

A pre-recording checklist for a Sony camera connected to a Mac

Check compatibility, USB connection, destination storage, and a sample transfer before starting a desk-based Sony recording session.

Clip Relay guide: Before you press Record

Check the exact model and operating system

A successful USB connection is only one part of a working recording setup. The app must support your camera, the camera must be in an appropriate connection mode, and the destination must be able to receive the files you are recording. Checking those details before a session is faster than debugging them after an important take.

Clip Relay requires an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 14.1 or later. The Sony A7R V is tested. Support for A7 IV, FX2, FX3/FX3A, FX30, and a6700 is experimental, so test your setup before an important session.

Use a simple connection first

Start with a direct USB connection and a cable intended for data transfer. If the camera does not appear, reduce the number of adapters and hubs in the path before changing many settings at once. Close competing camera-control applications during diagnosis.

Follow Sony’s remote-control setup instructions for your camera model and firmware. Check the Clip Relay product page for compatibility, then make a short test recording.

Choose a destination you can find and trust

Select a project folder on a connected drive with enough free space. Make its name specific enough that you will recognize it later: a project and recording date are more useful than another folder called New Videos. If you use an external drive, confirm it is mounted before starting.

The destination should remain available throughout the transfer. Avoid moving the folder, disconnecting the drive, or shutting the Mac lid while a clip is being copied. Wait until the app reports the operation complete before changing the physical setup.

Prove the whole path with a sample

Record a short sample at the settings intended for the real session. Stop, let the transfer finish, then open the Mac copy. Check audio, framing, duration, and the folder location. If you will edit immediately, import that sample into your editor.

Only then start the session. Keep original recordings until you have verified your working copies and backups. If the test fails, note which stage failed—connection, recording control, transfer, or playback—so the next troubleshooting step addresses the actual problem.
