Understand USB speed, hubs and cables, and try a direct-connection check when your Stream Deck+ touchscreen or controls behave unexpectedly.

Stream Deck+ through a USB hub or directly connected: what makes a difference?

Start with a connection you can compare

A hub can keep your desk tidy. If taps, page swipes, or the display stop responding reliably, try connecting your Stream Deck+ directly to your computer. Test the same page and media to see whether the connection makes a difference.

If a direct connection works, check the hub, its cable, and the port you were using. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helps.

A faster label does not change every device’s speed

Elgato documents Stream Deck+ as a USB 2.0 device. A faster USB or Thunderbolt dock does not make the device use the dock’s maximum advertised speed. The computer, port, cable and device all matter.

For everyday use, a reliable connection matters more than the biggest speed number on the box. If controls become unresponsive, compare a direct connection before replacing equipment or changing your plugin setup.

Check the whole connection path

Several devices may share a hub’s upstream connection. Power, cables and compatibility can also affect reliability. A cable intended for charging is not necessarily suitable for data. Follow the requirements for the hardware actually on your desk.

Check the requirements for your particular hub and cable, especially when several devices are connected. Ports on the same dock may offer different speeds or power levels.

Try one change at a time

Quit Stream Deck, reconnect the device directly to your computer using a known-good data cable, and reopen the application. Check ordinary page swipes and taps before testing GIF or video playback again.

If direct connection is reliable, reconnect through the hub and change one thing at a time: its port, its cable or the other attached devices. If the problem also happens directly connected and on ordinary pages, check Stream Deck updates and Elgato’s support guidance. Avoid repeatedly changing the plugin setup while the connection itself is unstable.

A reliable desk, without blanket rules

You can use a hub if it works reliably with your setup. A direct connection is a useful troubleshooting step when something goes wrong.

Once taps and page swipes work reliably, try your GIFs and videos again. Keep the same content during each test so it is easier to tell whether the connection change helped.
